This book is not a history of the Toronto Jungle scene. It is a snapshot of what the scene was like in the late 1990’s. During this period - 1998 to 2000 - Toronto’s Jungle scene was well established. There was, in my opinion, a pretty strong community of fans, DJ’s, MC’s, and promoters. Top acts arrived in the city every other week, and at least until Man Of Steel dropped, performances were rarely dull.Today, the kids think raves are Swedish House Mafia concerts at an arena with numbered seating. Torontonians who missed this chapter of the city’s history have no idea, and little evidence, that Toronto once had a large and popular warehouse party scene exposing underground electronic music to a generation eager to hear it.There are a number of reasons why this scene largely died. A sensational media portrayed ravers as drug fiend kids addicted to unprotected sex and bottled water. Politicians took advantage of the negative media coverage and decided to win votes by preventing possible problems for concerned parents. Then again, it could just be that the heads that started it all got older, needed time for other things, and the new school just didn’t have the same kind of drive. The mode of delivery simply changed, for better or for worse.Not being able to relive my first rave experience is one of the reasons I started shooting at parties. I didn’t dance, I hadn’t embraced drugs the same way others in the scene did, and most of my friends didn’t like going to parties as often as I did. Shooting gave me a reason to be there alone and through that I ended up meeting a lot of really cool people. Then I got older, moved on, and eventually just stopped going to parties.The pictures I took, most earlier shots lost over the years, will provide those who were there glimpses back to a time in their youth I am sure they have fond memories of (you may even appear in a photo). For those of you who weren’t around, this book will give you an idea about what it was like for those of us who spent our Friday and Saturday nights broking out, lightering, and demanding rewinds.
